February 2020 Update on Cafe Alma

Thank you all for participating in Cafe Alma over the past five months, especially our emcees, presenters, and discussion starters! This was an experiment in offering a SUNY-wide learning circle, where staff can learn from each other's successes and work through questions and challenges together.

Cafe Alma got off to a strong start, but participation has declined dramatically in the past few months and it's no longer serving the purpose of an online forum for staff questions and learning. These conversations continue to happen in the SUNY HQ Basecamp, and we strongly recommend following them there.

Please take a few moments to give us your feedback on the learning circle model, so we can pass that information to similar efforts at SUNY: Online Learning Circle Feedback Form

The last three sessions of Cafe Alma will be:

What is the Open Mic Series?

Starting Thursday, October 3rd, the former weekly Q&A meeting will become Café Alma Open Mic Thursdays!

  • Are you looking to sharpen your skills in Alma and Primo?
  • Are you hyped-up on lattes and need an outlet to share your love for Ex Libris?
  • Do you just want a place to lurk and learn once a week?

Whatever the reason, you belong at Café Alma!

Café Alma is a collaborative, peer-driven learning opportunity for SUNY Alma and Primo users. The Café is open (via Zoom) nearly every Thursday from 12 until 1 pm EST. The hour is divided into two activities: Open Mic and Q&A

Open Mic – Each participant gets 5 minutes to talk about whatever they want related to the day’s Alma or Primo topic. Share a successful workflow, ask a question, ask for suggestions on something you want to do.... or share an angsty poem, a helpful acronym, or even sing a song that includes the names of all the collections you’ve (de-)activated in the PCI. This is your time to shine!

Anyone who attends can participate. You can sign up for the Open Mic ahead of time or live via the session chat. To sign up or submit a question, go to the Session Details & Sign-Up page of this guide.

Q & A - What problems have been percolating in your Alma or Primo instance? Let’s put our heads together for some collaborative problem-solving. Anyone at the café can send questions through Zoom’s chat to everyone else, and questions can be discussed (or not!) as the group sees fit.
